As a reference for the Arab and Mediterranean worlds, the AWI bookshop contains more than 17,000 works in French, Arabic, and English. In addition to the latest periodicals—of which there are many in this cultural field—, the selection of French works comprises a large range of themes: literature, history, art, accounts of travel, the human sciences, philosophy, theatre, poetry, coffee-table books, and so on. These are complemented by a rich collection of traditional, contemporary, and classical music, documentary films, and fiction.
The Arab World Institute’s publications reflect its cultural activities: temporary exhibition catalogues, Museum albums (in French, Arabic, and English), the cultural magazine Qantara, publications for young people, Arabic language manuals, including the educational review Al Moukhtarat, a superb collection of ‘Les Musicales’ CDs, as well as cards, derived objects, and arts and crafts objects made by artisans working in the Arab world.
The bookshop has a unique collection of almost 4,000 Arabic language works: exhibition catalogues, ancient and modern history, classical and contemporary literature, literary studies, Arab philosophy, Islam and Sufism, sociology and essays by Arab feminists, political developments, Arabic language learning resources, theatre, poetry, accounts of travel, coffee-table books, and collections of caricatures.
The works of more than thirty publishing houses (some of the most prominent Arab publishers) are represented—Dār al-Adab, Dar Onboz (Lebanon), Dār al-Shourouk, al-Ayn (Egypt), Difaf/Ikhtilāf (Algerian-Lebanese co-publications), Kalimat (Emirates), Dar al-Salwa (Jordan), the Institut Français du Proche-Orient (IFPO), and the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies (ACRPS)—or disseminated: Éditions Le Fennec (Morocco) and Al-Mouassassa al-Arabiyya lildirāsāt wa al-Nachr (Jordan).
